Yoga for Mindfulness is a new course running that offers a holistic journey to well-being. In this course, students will delve into yogic philosophy, anatomy and mindfulness. Through the practice of yoga asana (poses), meditation, breathing techniques and mindfulness, students will experience the health benefits of yoga and simultaneously learn more about themselves through the process. This course will offer students the opportunity to incorporate more exercise into their daily routine in a non-competitive environment and with gentle instruction. Students will enhance their physical wellness by developing increased strength, flexibility and balance while simultaneously learning skills to manage a healthy school-life balance. Students will also learn to identify the precursors to stress and relieve the effects of anxiety and pressure more easily. This is an inclusive course for all grades, genders and abilities. The goal of this course is to teach students yoga postures and mindfulness techniques that they can use throughout the rest of their lives. Yoga will be practiced in the classroom and on field trips!

The class was started as a way of teaching students about coping mechanisms to get them through the day and to deal with emotions. It’s about being in the ‘now’. With technology and social media, it’s so easy to dwell in the past or worry about the future. The class teaches skills to cope with feelings and emotion, learning to recognize stressors in your life and learning to manage your reactions to them. We teach breathing techniques for energy, sleep, relaxing. Yoga and Mindfulness helps the students to balance the mind and body, so they can be the best they can be. This class offers a safe, welcoming place to sort yourself out when you’re stressed out. It offers structured and guided coping skills, and the yoga helps to release tension. The class teaches you to control your day, rather than your day controlling you.” (Matt Phillips)
